Individual 59ml tubes in the same Professional line cost $6–$9 each — around $0.10–$0.15/ml. The set isn't a per-volume bargain; it's a per-color bargain. You're getting 24 colors for roughly the price of 9 to 12 individual tubes.

So the real question is whether your artists need color range or large quantities. For a foundation painting class, the set wins. For large canvases, that white is going to disappear fast, and you should buy 250ml jars of the colors you burn through most.

What's the actual difference between Liquitex Professional and Basics lines?

It's tempting to look at unit prices and assume the Basics line is the smart buy. It's not that simple.

Basics has less pigment and more binder/filler per volume. In practice, that means a single coat of Professional Heavy Body will cover a 12×16" canvas, where Basics often needs a second coat. The price per finished painting is much closer than the price per bottle suggests.

Publicly listed print prices, January 2025: business cards run $20–$35 for 500; flyers run $80–$150 for 1,000. Custom UV prints on small acrylic or canvas panels typically run $5–$25 per piece at low quantities. Prices exclude shipping; verify current rates.

The breakeven point for us came out to roughly 200–300 rigid panels per year. Below that, ownership loses on total cost. Above that, it starts to make sense. Don't ignore the non-financial costs either: a misaligned color profile on a completed student batch is a rework expense no spreadsheet predicts. Do a test print before every production run. A 15-minute test with a $30 ink cartridge prevents the $1,500 batch you can't uncook.

Also remember: for standard products and quantities, online printers are dependable. For non-standard substrates or when you need hands-on color matching under studio light, outsourcing isn't an equal substitute. And if your students have a show date, a guaranteed turnaround matters because it's certain — not just because it's fast.

How do you thicken acrylic paint without buying expensive mediums?

Let's start with a truth that saves people real money: sometimes you shouldn't thicken at all — you should buy heavy body paint instead. Buying soft body or fluid acrylic and adding thickener is rarely cheaper per usable milliliter.

That said, there are legitimate ways to thicken acrylics without dropping $25 on a specialty gel:

  1. Let it evaporate. Leave the paint exposed for 30–60 minutes. Water escapes, body increases. It's the cheapest thickener in the studio.
  2. Use a gel medium like Liquitex Gel Medium. At about $15–$25 per 250ml, it increases the paint's body and volume — often cheaper per finished painting than buying more tubes.
