To be fair, dedicated fabric paints from textile suppliers work well. They're often the right answer if you're doing production work. - Apply thin layers. Acrylic ink is fluid enough to soak in. You don't need a thick layer for good color. Two thin coats usually beat one heavy coat.
- Dry completely, then heat-set. Use a dry iron on the reverse side, medium-high, no steam, for 3-5 minutes. If you can't access the reverse side, use a pressing cloth.
- Wait 72 hours before washing. I know that's inconvenient on a deadline, but it's the difference between 'tested' and 'ruined on the first wash.'
