Liquitex vs. Budget Acrylics: A Quality Manager's 4-Point Comparison

What This Comparison Actually Covers

I'm a quality and brand compliance manager at a regional art supply distributor. We serve roughly 180 school districts plus a couple dozen university and community studio accounts. I review every new SKU batch before it ships — about 200 unique items a year.

So when a purchasing director asks "can we just buy the cheap acrylic?", it lands on my desk.

Over the past two school years I've been running Liquitex against several lower-cost alternatives. Not out of brand loyalty — out of necessity. We buy for entire classrooms, and the per-unit price gap adds up fast. Here's what I compared:

Point 1: Gesso — Where the Difference Hides

Cheap gesso and Liquitex acrylic gesso look nearly identical out of the jar. White, creamy, brushable. A casual art teacher may not spot the difference in the first five minutes.

What shows up is what happens as the film cures.

The first test I run is a flex test: I bend a primed canvas strip and a primed panel to about 90 degrees. Low-cost gesso tends to use more calcium carbonate filler and less pigment load. That's not a guess — I watched it go chalky and crack at the fold on a sample we pulled in Q3 2023. Not every panel, but often enough that I can't pretend it's a fluke.

Liquitex acrylic gesso held up noticeably better. Two coats and it took repeated bends without cracking.

Here's the counterintuitive part. The cheap gesso was about 40% less per fluid ounce. But it needed three to four coats to reach the same opacity that Liquitex hit in two. That mostly erases the price advantage — and the extra coats are paid in class time, not just material.

The old "you'll need multiple coats anyway" line comes from an era when budget gesso was basically chalk in a jar. Formulas improved. The gap narrowed. It didn't close.

I'm not calling budget gesso unusable — for exploratory projects with younger students, it does the job. But when a work is going into a portfolio review, the extra coats and the extra class time become real money.

Point 2: Gel Medium — Where Budget Options Slip

This is the section where I want to push back on a common assumption.

People assume Liquitex acrylic gel medium is just "expensive white glue." It isn't. It's a workhorse that does several jobs at once:

  • Adhesive for collage and heavy materials
  • Matte or gloss extender — thins acrylic paint without wrecking film integrity
  • Transfer medium — lifts printed images onto a surface
  • Texture paste — builds impasto without paint waste

Budget gels handle the first two. The third and fourth are where things wobble. A cheaper formula I trialed dried with a yellow shift after a few months. That's the plasticizers and stabilizers showing their hand, and the transfer medium didn't hold ink consistently.

Honest caveat: I can't give you a convincing decade-scale yellowing study. We only started keeping reference samples in early 2023. Early samples show some drift, but I'm not going to overstate what that proves.

What I can measure is rework cost. When a transfer fails halfway through, the student redoes the project. Materials, class time, instructor prep — all extra.

Point 3: Clean-Up and the Permanent Marker Problem

It depends on what's underneath. If the plastic tray or table was primed with acrylic and the marker dried on top of that, you're fighting the film itself. Budget acrylics tend to smear and cloud more than fully polymerized ones — the surface ends up looking worse than the original mark. Ugh.

If it's bare plastic — marker on an unprimed palette, storage bin, or desk — 90% isopropyl alcohol usually works. Soak for 30 seconds, then wipe with a microfiber cloth. Textured plastic may need a soft toothbrush. Magic Erasers work but they're subtle abrasives and will leave white scratches on glossy plastic (clearly a lesson I learned the hard way). We had to replace a set of clear palettes after the whole batch came back scuffed. That went on the loss log for the quarter.

Which is why I treat medium quality as a maintenance issue, not just a performance one. Fully polymerized acrylic films resist scrubbing better. Cheap films on plastic substrates don't survive three weeks of classroom use and repeated cleaning.

In my first year on this job I made the classic spec error: I assumed "acrylic" meant the same adhesion and scrub-resistance profile from every vendor. It doesn't. Cost me a $9,400 credit note and a very long call with a district. Thankful that lesson landed on me and not on a customer.

Point 4: Total Cost — Where the Math Changes

This is the framework I wish purchasing teams adopted sooner. Unit price is the tip of the iceberg.

Total cost of ownership (i.e., not just what the jar costs) includes:

  • Base product cost
  • Number of coats needed to reach acceptable results
  • Class time per session — which is instructor salary
  • Write-off and replacement cost
  • Rework and redo
  • Storage and packing — brittle films break in transit more often

We watched a school save roughly $400 on a switch and then eat about $1,900 in damaged returns and rework across one semester. Our finance team books a journal entry for every batch we write off, and I started tracking "rework" as an actual line item after that. Until late 2023 we didn't have a formal write-off process at all — failures got absorbed into general supplies and nobody learned anything (note to self: build a proper dashboard).

One practical tip: keep a construction calculator open (or a phone) and run coverage. A gallon of gesso covers roughly 500–700 sq ft in a thin coat, but don't hold me to that — surface absorbency swings the number a lot. A 30-student classroom burns through maybe 8–12 sq ft of primed panels per session across a term, so multiply the coat difference by the actual weekly volume and see whether the "cheaper" jar still wins.

I'm not going to pretend these numbers are precise. They're estimates. But they point the same direction every time: once rework enters the picture, the savings evaporate.

The single biggest driver of TCO we've found is a mixed-supply approach — cheaper media for large-area base work, Liquitex where durability and consistency actually matter.

Which One, and When

If you want the plain version:

Pick Liquitex when:

  • Works will be kept, archived, or submitted for portfolio review
  • The project uses unusual surfaces — plastic, metal, heavy texture
  • Students mix their own mediums or attempt transfers
  • Parents will see the finished work
  • Pieces need to survive handling, packing, or storage

Budget alternatives are fine when:

  • It's exploratory work with younger students
  • Projects are practice pieces that get recycled
  • You're covering large base areas and color fields
  • The instructor runs high-volume, low-stakes sessions where variation doesn't affect the outcome

The recommendation I keep making: use Liquitex for priming, mediums, and final sealing; use budget brands for large-area, low-risk fill work. Sort by role, not by container.

One last thing. If a school has a single materials budget for the year, switching everything cheap looks like a win on paper. In my experience it comes back in the spring — in the reorder list, in the instructor emails, and in the loss log.

The worst line I ever got from a vendor was "it's within industry standard." The real standard isn't whether the deviation clears a tolerance — it's whether the panel survives the semester. Test against that, and the choice sorts itself out.
