Liquitex Paint Markers, Acrylic Comparisons, and Marker Removal: A Quality Checklist

What this checklist is for

I’m a quality and brand compliance manager at an art materials distributor. I review every incoming batch before it reaches school accounts—roughly 240 SKUs a quarter. In 2024, I rejected about 11% of first deliveries because of spec drift, labeling gaps, or batch color variation. This checklist is the short version I give to teachers, studio managers, and small retailers who need to approve art supplies without a full lab.

It has seven steps. It works for a 12-marker trial order and a 12,000-unit district order. Small doesn’t mean unimportant—it means potential.

Step 1: Define the actual job before you compare products

It’s tempting to think you can just compare price per milliliter or price per marker. But a Liquitex paint marker and a heavy-body acrylic tube are not the same job. One is for quick marks, signage, and mixed-media accents. The other is for building layers, texture, and color depth on canvas or board.

Ask: what surface? What drying time? Does it need to be waterproof? Will it sit in a hot storage room for six months? For a classroom, does the nib survive repeated use by 30 students?

Write the spec in plain language before you look at brands. Otherwise every product starts to look comparable.

Step 2: Verify the product line, not just the brand

Liquitex vs Winsor Newton acrylic is not one comparison. It is a comparison of specific lines. Liquitex has Basic, Heavy Body, Soft Body, Fluid, and Professional. Winsor & Newton has Galeria, Professional Acrylic, and other lines. A student-grade soft body and a professional heavy body can behave more differently than two brands in the same tier.

Check the pigment code, opacity, lightfastness rating, and binder. If safety matters—and it should—read the label. Cadmium-free does not mean every color in the line is free of all heavy metals. It means the cadmium pigments have been replaced in those specific colors. Some reds, yellows, and oranges still need normal studio handling.

I keep a one-page line card for every approved product. It lists what the product is not for. That negative space prevents most bad orders.

Step 3: Request a batch-specific spec sheet and label check

A brand-level spec sheet is not enough. You need the batch. For a Liquitex paint marker, check nib size, valve flow, drying time, and whether the batch matches the previous lot. For acrylic paint, check viscosity, pH, and color shift against your reference swatch.

In our Q1 2024 quality audit, we received a batch of 600 heavy-body acrylic tubes where viscosity was visibly off—around 26,000 cP against our 18,000–22,000 cP spec. Normal tolerance is plus or minus 10%. The vendor claimed it was within industry standard. We rejected the batch, and they redid it at their cost. Now every contract includes a viscosity and color tolerance clause.

Pantone guidance puts Delta E under 2 for brand-critical colors. A Delta E of 2 to 4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. Use that as a sanity check when a batch color looks “close but not right.”

If I remember correctly, the color shift in that batch was around Delta E 3.8. Not catastrophic. But for a school color code, it was a fail.

Step 4: Run a small blind test with actual users

I went back and forth between the established acrylic line and a lower-cost alternative for two weeks. The established line offered consistency; the new one offered about 18% savings. On paper, the new one made sense. But my gut said the classroom would notice.

So we ran a blind test with 24 art teachers. Same canvas board, same subject, same lighting. One set used Liquitex. One used the alternative. Then we asked which set looked more professional. Sixty-four percent picked the Liquitex set without knowing the difference. The cost increase was $0.42 per tube. On a 5,000-tube run, that’s $2,100 for measurably better perception.

Not ideal for the budget. Workable for the program. That test took two hours and saved us a year of complaints.

Step 5: Plan cleanup before the first mark

If you are asking how to get permanent marker off skin, do not start with harsh solvents. First, wash with warm water and soap. Then try an alcohol-based hand sanitizer or isopropyl alcohol on a cotton pad. For acrylic paint markers, clean before the paint dries—once it cures, you are removing a plastic film, not a stain.

For permanent marker on skin, some people use oil-based cleanser, toothpaste, or a mild exfoliant. That can work. But if the skin is broken, irritated, or you are sensitive, stop. This is not medical advice. For a child or anyone with a skin condition, check with a clinician before using solvents.

Keep a cleanup station in the classroom: soap, water, alcohol wipes, and paper towels. It sounds basic. It prevents most incidents.

Step 6: Verify any calculator or online tool you use

A weighted grade calculator and a creatinine clearance calculator have nothing to do with acrylic paint. But they share the same quality risk: a clean interface can hide a bad formula.

For a weighted grade calculator, check that the weights sum to 100% and that categories match your syllabus. For a creatinine clearance calculator, check the formula—Cockcroft-Gault, MDRD, or CKD-EPI—and the units. Age, sex, weight, and serum creatinine units change the result. A creatinine clearance calculator is a clinical tool, not a casual estimate. If you are using it for patient care, follow your institution’s protocol.

The rule is the same for art supplies: verify the source, the version date, and the units. If a tool does not show its formula, treat the number as marketing, not data.

Step 7: Document the decision and set a reorder threshold

Write down what you approved, why, and what would make you switch. For small orders, this matters more, not less. A 12-marker trial can reveal a nib problem before you commit to 1,200 markers.

Set a reorder threshold. If defects per 1,000 units go above 2%, hold the order and request a corrective action. If color shift goes above Delta E 4, quarantine the batch. If a Liquitex paint marker valve fails in more than 3 of 50 units, stop the line.

Looking back, I should have paid for expedited sample shipping on one project. At the time, the standard delivery window seemed safe. It wasn’t. We lost four days and had to air-freight a backup order. The expedited sample would have cost $80. The air freight cost $1,400.

Common mistakes and warnings

Most failures I see are not dramatic. They are small assumptions stacked on top of each other.
